I am interested in issues surrounding the curation of moving-image based work, and in developing the role of the 'artist-curator' as opposed to the idea of the 'professionalised and certificated' curator.
It is my belief, based on experience, that the moving image is not well curated at the present time and the result is that audiences miss out on the rich experience that moving images can potentially give. This is despite the plethora of moving images that saturate daily life. But the moving image sits uneasily within the contemporary art fold: often excellent work is subjected to inexplicable curatorial decisions that do not do justice to the works themselves.
I am trained as film-maker, with a background as a cultural historian. I am particularly interested in work that looks at ideas surrounding place, locality, transculltural experience, and which interrogates received notions of culture and social constructs.
I've been involved as an artist/curator since around 1998 when I started to present artists' film and video art within the framework of artist-run projects. Since 1997 I've been an artist-curator with the Luna Nera collective of independent artists.
From 2002 I have been involved in critical writing about a variety of art related subjects. I produced the critical website SiteSpecificArt.org.uk and the forthcoming book Artsite: Art as Site Response.
Since 2003 I have been working as an independent curator, and am interested in curating moving image works of all kinds.
