This readymade serves as a physical manifestation of the artist’s struggle with body dysmorphia. By stepping onto the scale, the viewer experiences not only the dysmorphic mental state but also the physical sensation the artist endures.
Though a scale is typically an objective tool, this one consistently labels the user as fat, regardless of their actual weight. In doing so, the piece highlights the distortion of body image in today’s society, turning a mundane object into a powerful commentary on the relentless nature of self-criticism and social pressure.
It reflects the pervasive expectation to be thin, an anxiety many people share. By confronting the viewer with the disconnect between appearance and self-worth, the work challenges us to question the narratives we internalise about our bodies.
