Judy Rodrigues

Bristol
Judy Rodrigues is a painter and visual artist drawing from nature and its metaphorical contexts with research areas in the poetics of environment and diaspora .

I am a contemporary visual artist, a painter born in London but spent my childhood on the Isle of Wight. This childhood has I feel, led to a very free, direct and natural way of open learning and enquiry in terms of how my work is informed, researched and progresses.

My paintings evolve in connection to the elemental environment and the  nature of places that generate intuitive responses and poetic associations.

In the studio I work on large canvases over many years that suggest their form through a process of continual application, erasure, excavation, mark making and layering. Over time, smaller works develop alongside these larger paintings often suggesting related thematic, etymological ,symbolic and mythological subjectivities as I work abstractly with the gathering and collecting of information through drawing, assemblages, on site ephemera, journals and reading. Through this activity I seek out a  symbiotic flow  between the paintings and the ‘spaces/places’ I am working in to create the poiesis I am looking for to complete the paintings.
