32 Days of String

By  Yoonjung Kim 2012 - 2013
For 32 days, I split a 2cm thick 10m long cotton rope into its individual strands and rolled them into balls one by one. Each ball is stored in a zipper storage bag with a numbered label for which I used an automatic numbering stamp. I timed and recorded the process of separating each strand, spending 185 hours and 21 minutes in total. The average time I spent in a day was 5 hours and 49 minutes, the average time I spent separating a single strand was 12 minutes and 15 seconds. The 914 balls are shown in museum style display tables alongside A4 printed time sheets documentation. I also made a video documentation (08:27) of how I split a piece of string from a rope in the process of making.
