On a visit to Treptower Park in Berlin, I chanced upon the commemoration of the fallen Red Army soldiers at the Soviet War Memorial (location: 52° 29’ 15” N 13° 28’ 05” E) designed by Yakov Belopolsky. A sea of colour lay before me. Flowers, some fresh and intact, others broken and headless, were either placed or strewn across the floor of the memorial. They looked so beautiful, caught in the transition between life and death, real but abstract in appearance, perfection, and deformity intertwined.
