A Compromise of Clades (2016)

At the start of Saturday Night Fever Tony (John Travolta) walks down the street carrying a tin of paint, in the background The Bee Gees are singing “You can tell by the way I use my walk…” Do we choose the way we walk, the route, the style? This way, that way, A to B, to C or is ‘the journey the destination’? High streets are shared spaces, we walk with the flow, sometimes against, adapting to the context. Can we change the way we walk, our nature, and nurture a new style? A Compromise of Clades consists of 112 micromental sculptures, embedded in the everyday shared space of The Flag Market, sited with the intent to illicit style; to slow us down, to consider and to choreograph our movement, to draw with our arms and legs. Preston City Council and Martin Hamblen invited the Preston public to playfully participate with A Compromise of Clades (2016), a site-specific A Frame agility course, commissioned for The Flag Market summer programme.
