A Cross in Flanders.

By  George Taylor 2011

Dimensions
67cms x 48cms

Minimalist collage comprised of torn paper, card, paint and pencil, broadly alluding to visits to First World War battlefield locations and the use of the cross as a religious cipher; although in this case, the cross stands alone, symbolically and is not rigidly geometric or repetitive. In a sense, I was attempting to create a minimalist antithesis to Stanley Spencer's beautifully complex composition of crosses in the main, central panel of 'The Resurrection of the Soldiers' at Sandham Memorial Chapel.
