A Rendition

'A Rendition' was a 30 minute interactive performance in a corridor, resulting in a temporary installation. In the performance, using sound effects and visual props, the corridor becomes a suburban street, then a runway and then returns to its original state with some traces of its transformation remaining. The source image for the central soft sculptures were pollarded trees but they also suggested human figures reaching with damaged limbs; similarly the charcoal figures drawn on the wall form the extensions of tree shadows but could be people guiding helicopters in to land; and the texts defined rendition variously as a graphic device, a performance and the practice of moving suspected terrorists from one country to another where they can be interrogated under torture. I wanted to evoke an atmosphere of the clandestine and to involve the audience in unwittingly constructing it, thus implicating them and myself in the activities suggested by the images and text and critiquing a tendency to retreat from political action into bourgeois pleasures.
