The design was inspired by ideas of law and the town of Chesterfield. A stack of large reinforced concrete books acts like a foundation for the sculpture. This came from the idea of learning and written law being the foundation of the legal system. The many passageways and entrances around the town's market area, with distinctive archways and columned walkways, influenced the design, along with the timber struts of Tudor buildings. The industrial heritage of the area was also a consideration.
