Advent
Advent 2020 – Drawings made using a turntable, exploring rotation, repetition, and rhythm. Ink on paper, each 10 x 15 cm.
Each year during Advent (1st-24th December), a new drawing is created daily, resulting in a self-contained series of 24 works. Advent is chosen not for its religious connotations but for the broader meaning of “advent” as emergence or arrival, and for its temporal structure. The clearly defined span of days offers a framework for repetition and reflection, a consistent rhythm that invites making without overthinking.
The drawings reflect whatever is unfolding in the studio at the time: playful experiments, passing whims, things made simply for the pleasure of making, or gestures I want to see evolve through sustained repetition. There are a few unspoken rules—each year follows a single technique, format, and style. The project began in 2020, a year of rupture and constraint. What might have began as a response to that year’s intensity—a gesture toward simplicity, attention, and ongoingness has become a quiet ritual: a rhythm I hope to follow for as long as it remains alive in the studio.
Advent 2023 – Little experiments in Suminagashi (Japanese marbling), embracing chance and fluid mark-making. Ink on newsprint paper, each 9 x 13 cm approx.
Advent 2024 – Working wet-on-wet with ultramarine ink, using a needle-like dispenser to scratch gestures and allow the ink to split and colour to disperse. Ink on paper, each 21 x 29.7 cm
