Aperture

Sandra Bouguerch

Aperture was a site-specific installation in Cubicle Gallery, PS Mirabel, Manchester, for the Artifice exhibition. The space was previously a shower cubicle and this history is still in evidence above and below the boarded walls. The work makes visual and conceptual references to both meanings of the word aperture. The holes and gaps of the small cubicle subtly feature in the subject of a series of photographs. These suggest points of transit and hint at spaces beyond. Similarly with the mechanism for capturing the photographs, the title of the piece refers to the variable opening that allows light to enter the camera, thus controlling exposure and depth of field. Appearances can be deceptive, however, and all is not as it may first appear, thereby challenging the reliability of photography as a truthful medium.
