Arabesques, stars with dragon

Medium: stitched woven and printed polythene, Polyester/Cotton bias, thread, quilting pins, acrylic knitted flat braids, six stainless steel screw rings Arabesques, stars with dragon installation was developed for Migration exhibition curated by Jessica Hemmings. First shown at KANEKO Centre, where it was part of a large exhibition Fiber (Omaha, Nebraska, February- April 2015), Migrations traveled to the National College of Art & Design Gallery, Dublin, Ireland (April-May 2015); ADspace, UNSW Galleries, Sydney; Australian Design Centre, Sydney, Australia ( January- February 2016); Huddersfield Art Gallery, England (September-January 2017). Migrations explored the notion of textiles as carriers of multiple cultural influences. The exhibition brought together contemporary artists, designers and an author who all work at the intersection of cultures and use multiple, portable textiles as their vehicle. Migrations included works by Godfried Donkor, Françoise Dupré, Dan Halter, Toril Johannessen, Pamela Johnson Mr Somebody & Mr Nobody, Julie Ryder. Her most recent publication is Cultural Threads, Transnational Textiles Today. It was published by Bloomsbury in late 2014. Françoise Dupré’s chapter is titled ‘From Brixton to Mostar: social practice through textiles’ (pp168-189). To mark the launch of the publication, a symposium was held at Central Saint Martins on Saturday 7 February 2015.
