Arrival of the Sacred White Elephant

Julie Westbury

Dimensions
H50 x L64 cm

Information in the Margate Museum led me to Lord George Sanger a circus entrepreneur in the late 19th century and inspired a series of work involving The Sacred White Elephant. On its arrival was found to be 'a Patchwork looking beast', a pink white and grey colour, so 'Sanger' had it whitewashed twice a day before performances to save face.
