Assemblage of Lived Systems

By Helen Kilby Nelson 2022 - 2026

This image forms part of an ongoing body of work exploring lived experience within multiple systems. Beginning in 2022 and continuing.

The work began with the disassembly of official documents and has developed into layered assemblages of text, material and ephemera. Fragments are stitched, held, contained and partially exposed, bringing together both the language of systems and traces of lived experience.

These structures are uneven and weighted, shifting the work from something to be viewed to something to be physically encountered.

The work holds multiple systems in tension, while also considering how fragments are carried and contained, bringing gestures of care into tension with institutional language.
