Bay (11-24)

By  Matthew Webber 2022 - 2024

My paintings are produced extremely slowly, often with dozens of layers applied before a piece is finished. The more layers the painting has - the more surface history there is - then the more interesting the final result tends to be. I have a big stockpile of old, failed paintings in my studio store, and sometimes, when I need a challenge or when I don't want to start a painting from scratch, I will dig out an old painting and see if it can be saved. This is one of those pieces - an artwork that I've lived with in one iteration for years - that now lives on in a new, improved version. Look hard and you can see those early marks. Pentimento is a kind of memory of the paintings past life - something I'm very interested in with my work, and with how this relates to landscapes and our own environment.
