Behind This Wall

I painted this after revisiting a ramshackle house in Jerusalem where I lived for a while as a teenager. The sun was shining through holes in the roof of the veranda making bright shapes on the dingy flaking-paint surface of the wall. I tried to capture in the painting an amalgamation of the place and the flood of memories it evoked: the brightness of feeling safe along with the precariousness of refuge; the fleeting moments and circumstances that can flip so easily between safety and danger.
