Children at Play

Located on one side of the old Firestation in The Fountain Estate, Londonderry and adjacent to the city walls, 'Children at Play' reflects the neighbourhood's aspirations for a non-contentious future as well as mirroring images of the past. The themes within the carving were developed through a series of creative workshops and residencies with local community groups. All carving was done in situ and this provided an opportunity for people to discuss the project with the artist and gain an understanding into how the concept had developed as well as offering the unique opportunity for local residents to try their hand at carving. A unique encoded 'message' reflects the hope, future aspirations and pride in the local community. The key to reading the carved code has been given to all members of the community in the hope that this positive message will be passed down through generations to come.
