Chimney #01

James Mulkeen

Chimneys are an icon of our industrial heritage and they invite us to think about our nation's productivity and manufacturing expertise. Chimneys help to shape our skylines and aid us in navigating our way in the city. Chimneys make you look up! This chimney stands as a symbol of Sheffield’s proud heritage as a city of makers and offers the Sheffield skyline a new beacon. The iconic conical shape of a chimney was removed from a solid vertical form and combined with two contrasting perforated materials. This allows us to see the ghost of a chimney framed by a solid structure. Functionally, it partially conceals the ducting and flues of residential development at Hollis Croft, Sheffield. ?Designed in collaboration with AXIS Architecture for Future Generation. Materials - Corten steel and aluminum ? ?22m height
