Circuit is the result of a Science-Art collaboration between researcher Ruth Moon (King's College, London) and artist Kristy Campbell.
Through correspondence this creative duo discussed Moon’s research ‘Establishing the role of Epigenetics in the development, maturation and maintenance of the auditory system’.
In the primary stages of artistic development, the visual aspect of ‘the golden ratio’ was used to reference the coiled structure : the cochlea. With this, the spiral snail formation implied movement within the design. The circular composition presented a cycle, a process, form that could be dissected and reassembled. Additional elements and shapes were bought in to the design temporarily to enhance the visual narrative of the complex subject matter. This idea of reassembling and rearranging lead to a more fractured composition of line and shape which exposed the changes in hearing states; this was demonstrated further through the use of colour and the mirroring of parts of the design (healthy state and hearing loss state).
The final version of Circuit explores three key elements of this research. The coiled cochlea has remained consistent throughout the progression of the artwork, as have the different frequency lines. The vertical curvature illustrates the part that DNA plays in Moon’s research, and to finish, the puzzle-like nature of the artwork is a representation of the different experimental results that piece together forming a cohesive whole.
