The artwork
"Coal Dust to Crushed Clean Pixels" captures the essence of Northumberland's transition from its industrial past to a future of renewable energy. This time, instead of remixing his paintings, Hannon created a videoart piece clashing the Northumberland Flag with geometric shapes found in a World War II Bunker in Blyth. The video is not the end of the process, it is then mined to create the final digital art piece.
The title evokes imagery of transformation, from the gritty residue of coal dust to the pristine clarity of digital pixels. It symbolises the shift from traditional industries to innovative technologies, from the old to the new.
The transformation from a heritage steeped in industrial prowess to one centred on renewable energy marks a significant shift for the community in Northumberland. Hannon observes this transition with a blend of anticipation and concern, acknowledging the region's historical significance during wartime and industrial eras.
Despite the promise of a sustainable future offered by renewable energy, Hannon recognises the sense of loss and scepticism among locals who feel disconnected from its benefits. The absence of tangible advantages, such as employment opportunities and community reinvestment, exacerbates feelings of mistrust and neglect.
In reflecting on this predicament, Hannon empathises with the community's rightful demand for fair outcomes. The transition to renewable energy should not solely focus on environmental conservation but also on uplifting and empowering local communities. There's a pressing need to bridge the gap between global environmental imperatives and the immediate needs of the community.
