Coalescence
Photographer: Lucy Forrester
Coalescence is constructed from discarded white shoelaces joined through thousands of fine dressmakers' pins. Arranged side by side and lightly fused through heat, the individual laces form a fragile textile-like structure that hovers between fabric, drawing and repair.
The work explores processes of connection, accumulation and holding together. Rather than being woven or stitched, the material is temporarily stabilised through acts of pinning and gentle adhesion. The resulting structure appears cohesive, yet remains vulnerable; its integrity depends upon a delicate balance of tension, pressure and care.
The dressmakers' pins, a recurring material within my practice, function both as practical devices and visual elements. Their repeated placement creates a subtle rhythm across the surface, while simultaneously revealing the labour required to sustain the work's fragile unity.
Through simple, everyday materials, Coalescence reflects upon acts of repair and the desire to bring separate elements into relation. The work considers how forms of connection—whether material, social or ecological—are often provisional, contingent and sustained through ongoing acts of attention and care.
