Covenant of Salt

Covenant of Salt is a participatory performance that draws from the ancient idea of covenant, in particular the notion of covenants between god and humankind. Many of these can be found in the bible - spoken agreements which are sealed with sacred meals.
Dressed as an Old Testament priest, the artist invites the audience to collude in a contractual act of whispering, sealed by eating together. The work balances solemn ceremony with humour, and invites us to consider the performative quality of the contracts which bind us in everyday life.
Commissioned for Venice Agendas: The Contract at Turner Contemporary, Margate.
