Dividing Lines II

Acrylic on canvas. This painting is part of a series exploring borders, dividing lines, mapping landscapes. They start as a black ground and the strata lines are scratched across the surface, I feel the process is important, it references erosion, the removal of material and connects with the geological processes within the landscape. The edges of these paintings contain references to maps, to territory and ownership, expressed through detailed mapping of roads, contours, bjildings, references to our built environment. They are art works about surface and our fragile existence on a thin layer of land, as juxtaposed with the heavy weight and depth of the geology below.
