Dwelling: 10

By  Sandy Sykes 2006 - 2007

I was selected for a Solo Exhibition in one of the larger of the Project Spaces (No. P7) at the ‘London International Art Fair 2007’, Business Design Centre, London. The curators of the Project Spaces initially selected some 1 metre x 1.5 metre woodcut prints called “Manuscript’, but then saw the ‘Dwelling’ drawings I did on my Residency at ‘Firstsite Contemporary Art Gallery’ in January 2006 and selected them also. I made two new series to be exhibited with those drawings. I was also showing 15 ‘Manuscript’ prints simultaneously at the Rabley Contemporary Drawing Centre in Marlborough. KITES, TENTS, REFUGEES AND A DOG AT THE GATE…. “ Everything Sandy Sykes makes has complex and complicated relations with everything else she makes” Mel Gooding In Sandy Sykes drawings, prints and artists books history, fact and fiction blur into new mythologies. There are fragments of real lives, situations, agonies and loves clipped from books, newspapers and Sykes’ mind to be imbedded into her poetic compositions. She evokes a rollercoaster of human emotions that will make you cry and laugh in equal parts. ‘Dwelling’ is a new series of 20 drawings using pencil and ink as the simplest of means to reveal the complex relationship between their drawn elements. Tents and human kites are held to the surface with line anchors, providing refuge and hope, the prospect of a new history from a tortured world.
