Empty chair series

By  Lexi Strauss 2011 - 2014

Dimensions
240cm x 160cm

(left to right) Debutants, 240 x 160 cm, oil and acrylic on canvas. Ozymandias, 240 x 170 cm, oil and acrylic on canvas. Longing for the Home that never existed, 240 x 170 cm, oil and acrylic on canvas. Heroes, 21 x 29 cm, acrylic on paper. As the chair was once a domestic luxury, the metaphorical ‘empty chair’ is seldom found in folklore, making empty chair imagery peculiar to the depiction of the human condition in a post-industrial society. The chairs represent people held back by various belief systems that sustain a sense of alienation in society.
