Entanglement
Photographer|: Jules Lister
Entanglement is constructed from grasses gathered in Holmfirth with their roots intact and discarded shoelaces transformed through heat. Bound together, these materials form a dense network in which distinctions between root and plastic, growth and manufacture, become uncertain.
The work considers how synthetic materials have become embedded within contemporary ecologies. Melted shoelaces appear to spread through the grasses like rhizomes or fungal threads, mimicking the structures through which landscapes are connected and sustained. What seems natural is revealed to be partially artificial; what appears artificial begins to resemble living matter.
Hovering between attraction and unease, Entanglement reflects on a world in which petrochemical materials are no longer external to nature but increasingly entangled within it. The work invites reflection on the hidden systems that bind together human activity, material production and ecological life.
