ergh mmm (Translating the Wind)

By  Chris Wright 2016
The impetus for this sound work was a sailing residency looking at the implications of transient place. For this work, ergh mmm (Translating the Wind), I tried to describe the sounds during a very windy day in harbour. Writing the informal words commonly used for such purposes, ergh, mmm, err, tick, ting, for example, with a notation for pitch, these were later translated back to sound. I realised that I had been thinking about the inadequacy of words in describing sound, or, indeed, artwork. This piece is being developed from the single event that is here to a work where the layers are separated and the experience of the work, act of listening, shifts to the listener and their trajectory in the gallery. The image shows the original notation aboard a rocking boat.
