In 2006 I was selected by Insite Arts, art consultants representing Land Securities Group Plc to lead on a commission in Exeter city centre. The brief was to design a large scale integral glass commission for a Pavilion building in the new Princesshay retail development. With the cathedral at close proximity behind, I took as my inspiration the sacred architecture of the cathedral, particularly the notion of rood screens. Also the city of Exeter and the cathedral share a unique history; connected to the oldest known underground water system in the country. I incorporated this point of interest symbolically into the design. However, the main concept behind the development and the design was that the glass pavilion building would be a focal point through which a new sight line to the cathedral would be opened.
