Farewell concert

By  Katy Beinart 2010

Katy Beinart

The wax press of an old 78 is a ghostly relic, of technology now defunct, and of music which marked a departure. Edith Pearlman became a concert pianist, having trained in Hull, and before she left for South Africa she gave a farewell concert at the home of her tutor, Mrs Russell-Starr. We often select certain pieces of music to act as markers for moments in our life, or as requiems for a part of our life or a person who is no longer with us. The pieces Edith played mark an important moment for her, and allow us to travel back in time.
