Artist book, National Trust commission, Lindisfarne Castle, 2018
Commissioned by the National Trust, Feelings of Kindly Reverence was developed in response to wall paintings uncovered during restoration work at Lindisfarne Castle. Structured as a wallpaper sample book, the artist book explores ideas of craftsmanship, care and continuity through pattern, repetition and material sensitivity.
The work was inspired by the relationship between gardener Gertrude Jekyll and architect Edwin Lutyens, whose collaboration at Lindisfarne Castle was shaped by mutual respect, restraint and attention to detail. Drawing on this dialogue between people, materials and place, the book considers restoration not as a process of returning something to a fixed state, but as an ongoing conversation across time.
Through repeated patterns and considered making, Feelings of Kindly Reverence reflects on quiet acts of attention, the small gestures of care, observation and craftsmanship that allow places and their histories to endure.
