Finding Frances - the biography of Frances Darlington (sculptor)

By  Louise Marchal 1989 - 2013

Louise Marchal

Biography of Frances Darlington (1880-1940), a Yorkshire sculptor born in Headingley, Leeds who grew up in Ilkley and Harrogate and went on to study at the Slade in London. Taught by Sir George Frampton (Peter Pan, Kensington Gardens, Lamia etc) and by Edouard Lanteri, the man Rodin termed "Dear Master", her contemporaries included Gwen and Augustus John, Edna Clarke-Hall, Albert Rutherston and his elder brother William Rothenstein. The research for this took many years, intermittently throughout my adult life. Only in 2011 did I feel I was approaching the time when I might have sufficient material to put together into a book. I decided to self publish so I could create the book exactly as I wanted, including the cover design and page layout. From this I decided to start my own publishing company, The Marble Press from which I hope to publish other authors.
