fjord I

By  Charlotte Harker 2007 - 2008

David Harker

This drawing is influenced in part by the drawings of 19th century Japanese graphic art and woodblock prints of contemporary Chinese printmaking. The marks in this work also resembles the texture of lines and dots found in etchings and lithographs, giving the effect of a negative image. The image is based on a fragmented viewpoint of a place once visited. The fjord image is based on a view toward the steep rock face on one side of a Norwegian fjord. The shape is delineated by it's own boundary, which frees it from the traditional compositional frame. In moving away from incorporating more traditional landscape reference points, this work has a more abstract sense. The drawing functions both as self contained image with it's own sense of mass and depth, while simultaneously appearing as floating textural fragment. In this images there is a sense of disjointedness and coherence.
