Heterotopic frictions are spaces of engagement where layers of place and identity intrude, intersect and clash. They can exist at the slipping of the imagined into the actual, and similar to Joanne Tompkins description of the heterotopia in theatre, appear only for short bursts of time. The fleeting appearance of heterotopic frictions emerges with the support of a material channel that includes re-purposing existing media available to both dominant and counter-hegemonic agencies.
The intrusion of heterotopic frictions is where counter imaginings of subjective worlds protrude, if only for a moment, into reality. Heterotopic friction creates spaces where we can imagine alternative worlds, explore counter histories and counter interpretations.
