'Florastone' Portland Stone sculpture for New Downe Hospital, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. 1.5m high, 2008. The starting point for the concept of 'Florastone' came from the ancient Struell Wells in County Down, places of hope for healing. I particularly liked the strong simple geometry of these structures. I then worked upon establishing the right shape and scale for the site, to give the sculpture a definite presence without being in any way overpowering. The abstracted flora design, carved in relief, relates directly to the inspiring setting of the Struell Wells, bringing nature into the hospital.
