gateway

David Harker

Gateway Gateway is a depiction of a manmade structure and intervention in a landscape setting. The location is Praa Sands in Cornwall. By rendering this image in paint I emphasised the arrangement of colour, shape and texture. The technique is one of layering, removing and reworking the paint to form the image. Part of a series of landscape paintings, I painted Gateway in order to communicate a tactile sense of the depicted surfaces; the surface erosion on the sea wall and the softness of the sand, the unsettled sea. By depicting these elements I aimed to bring together the feeling of space, light and atmosphere. Gateway also communicates a sense of orientation. The painting shows the view toward the sea and sands through the opening between the sea wall. This work is exhibited at The Cabinet Exhibition at Islington Arts Factory from 14-21 September 2012.
