The Geoneedle was commissioned for the opening of the East Devon and Dorset coastal path as a UNESCO world heritage site. The six metre high sculpture built in Portland stone has the insets that represent the order the stone was deposited during the distant past of the Mesozoic Era 250 million - 65 million years ago, including Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Red sandstone, White lias, Blue lias, Ham hill stone, Forest marble, Portland stone, Purbect marble and Beer stone.
