Ground Level

Claire Tindale

During an artist residency on an allotment site in South Manchester I decided to focus on soil as a method of exploring local and global socio-political constructs surrounding the working of the land. It has the capacity to be a great social leveller, as in the case of allotments, or in a wider context it can be a potential source of conflict through dispute over ownership and boundaries. The collection of colours generated by the analysis of the properties of soil samples from across the site lends itself to both literal and metaphorical interpretations. Whilst the location of samples combined with the map of the area, engenders the work with a site-specific quality.
