Hackney 2007 / Berlin 2008

Time & Place by Elly Clarke The photographs in this series are put together for aesthetic and emotional reasons. Every pairing or tripling has a personal narrative. Hackney/Martin Gropius Bau tells the story of my move to Berlin - what I left behind, and what I found when I arrived, while a snapshot of a difficult time in a hotel called Cesars in Tijuana, Mexico, is paired with a person suspended in space, exploring part of the Pyscho Buildings exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London. Other images are put together because, to me, they are essentially the same image. This applies to Hackney/Hope and to the Thai Border/California pairings. They are not the same content; but they are snapshots that encapsulate a feeling, a mood, that was similar in both places, at both times. All photographs are single edition 6”x4” (10cmx15cm) prints, taken from my archive of photos from 2002-2009. All are signed and rubber-stamped on the back and the titles letter-pressed into the passpartout. The series was originally developed for a solo exhibition that took place earlier this summer in gallery located in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, South London. I wanted to bestow value upon the snapshot format in the digital age and encourage people to think about their own archives. I have been working with the Single Edition 6”x4” format for a while, through a number of different projects. Photo-Trio hat seine ganz persönliche Geschichte. So erzählt das Paar Hackney/Martin Gropius Bau von meinem Umzug nach Berlin-davon, was ich zurückgelassen habe und was ich fand, als ich ankam. Ein anderes Paar besteht aus einem Schnappschuss während einer schwierigen Zeit im 'Cesars' Hotel in Tijuana, Mexiko, und einem im Raum 'schwebenden' Menschen, einem Teil der Psycho Buildings Ausstellung in der Hayward Galerie in London. Andere Photo-Paare entstanden dadurch, dass beide Bilder -für mich- im Wesentlichen EIN Bild waren. Dies trifft bei den Zusammensetzungen Hackney/Hope und Thai Border/California zu. Zwar haben sie nicht den gleichen Inhalt, doch sind es Momentaufnahmen, die ein bestimmtes Gefühl beschreiben, eine Stimmung,die an beiden Orten zur jeweiligen Zeit präsent war. Alle Bilder sind Einzelstücke in der Größe 6''x4'' (10cm x 15cm) aus meinem Photoarchiv von 2002 bis 2009.Sie sind auf der Rückseite signiert und gestempelt und die Übeschriften im Passepartout abgedruckt. Ursprünglich war diese Photoserie als Einzelausstellung vorgesehen und wurde Anfang des Sommers (2009) in der Galerie des Queen Elizabeth Hospitals in Woolwich, South London,gezeigt.Ich wollte damit der Momentphotopraphie im digitalen Zeitalter Aussagekraft verleihen und Menschen zum Nachdenken anregen. Ich arbeite seit einer Weile mit Einzelstücken in der Größe 6''x4'', die verschiedene Projekte betreffen. Ubersetzung: Kathleen Herold.
