Heart Leaves

‘Heart Leaves’ is a wall construction sculpture, comprising of 21 small forms, constructed from paper and plastic sheet, which extends over a length of 3.3 meters.

The folded forms are developed from simple hand drawn lines, shapes and patterns in my notebooks. These often refer to natural forms which reveal how simple shapes can be, yet so complex. As I cut out the shapes to explore them three dimensionally by folding/bending along scored lines, they create different angles and shadows.

Each folded form creates a light and darker side, and the shape of the shadow underneath the form on a flat surface, naturally changes throughout the day and night. These subtle, gentle changes give the work a sense of time and movement.

The colour red is used to punctuate a spacing, a rhythm like listening to the beginning of a song lyric. Red is also used on the underneath surface of some white paper forms so that the colour reflects onto the wall behind the form.

The wall in my studio is over two hundred years old, the history of the wall with all its odd uneven bumps and irregular cracks are considered as part of the construction. As the newly made pristine white paper forms contrast with the age of the wall. Each can focus attention on the differences between the old and new qualities.

This work ‘Heart Leaves’ is part of a series of similar wall construction sculptures that were developed during the covid epidemic.

‘Movements in curves ( Bleeding Hearts)’ 2020-21 and also previous work. ‘In the passage of time’ 2019 and ‘Echoes’ (night time voices) 2016.
