Hunter/Hunted

By  Kye Wilson 2012
Hunter/Hunted is a site-specific, multi-channel video and sound installation created by intermedia artist collective WE (Wilson-Eflerová) in response to the rural estate of Mottisfont Abbey located in the Test Valley, Hampshire. Through the use of temporary, non-interventional media the artwork will challenge visitor expectations of how art can be experienced outside a traditional gallery environment. Hunter/Hunted re-interprets and reflects the character and history of the site, in particular Mottisfont’s hunting past, within a contemporary context. The artwork has been inspired by a statue of the Theban hero Actaeon located in the Mottisfont gardens. WE have taken the Greek myth of this statue, in which the hunter becomes the hunted, as a conceptual point of departure. The theme of hunter/hunted is reflected in both the content and display of the artwork, questioning the ideas of power and control, and the fine line between these seemingly oppositional positions.
