'Icarus Shroud (after Michelangelo) : The Human Condition'. 1991. Charcoal, pencil, ink & wash on paper. 244x77cm.

By  Phil Whiting 1991
A seminal work recently rediscovered which freed me to explore the human condition in terms of witness and experience through the medium of art. It led directly to my post industrial paintings and my post conflict paintings in which I sought to make haunting icons of the increasingly barren and scarred landscapes left behind by the tragic, often heroic struggle by mankind to control, dominate and exploit the natural world and one another.
