In Shadow

This painting could be read as an exploration of the Jungian notion of the 'inner shadow', yet the 'darkness within' is itself obfuscated by a confusion of identity, a blurring of the comprehension of self. Imprisonment can restrain the physical body but it is debatable to what extent the spirit of a person can be fettered by another. The body of a political prisoner can be locked away from society but their symbolic image and the ideals that they stand for are free, kept alive and at liberty within the hearts and minds of their comrades and supporters.
