Joyful Sound: weaving light

The first iteration of this installation was created in November 2017 for The Piano Shop, Bath, a twisting, wave of vintage piano keys that ebbed and flowed through the three shop windows in the way that music rises, falls and weaves around and through us. Julieann continues to seek ways of evoking what music looks like, inspired by composers and musicians who take a theme and then create variations on it, such as Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Glen Gould’s interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. In Joyful Sound 2 white twine lines weave in space, emanating out from the undulating piano keys, in the way that sound travels and dances through the air. If music is what our emotions sound like perhaps this is how music, and the emotions embodied by it, look. A further variation on this theme will be made in the Spring 2019.
