My portraits are a documentation through painting and drawing of myself, my friends and acquaintances. I concentrate on the formal aspects of painting including composition and arrangements of texture and colour. As well as likeness I aim to capture something of the individuality and uniqueness of each person.
I was inspired in part to paint the portrait titled Kathy after viewing 'Assumption of the Virgin' (1516-18) by Titian. In this painting the upward angle of the head of the Virgin interested me as a compositional arrangement for a portrait. The flat background colour employed by early Italian Renaissance artists such as Baldovinetti in 'Portrait of a Lady' (1470) also informed the content of my painting.
