'Limits' - Performance drawing at the Folkestone Triennial Fringe Festival

Saranjit Birdi

This work was created for 'blood sweat + tears', an artist-led project for the opening weekend of the Folkestone Triennial Fringe Festival 2011. The artists shared their discoveries and insights through a series of installations, performances and interventions which addressed issues of identity, visibility, dislocation and transience. 'Limits' was the frst drawing I created attempting to draw the visible limits of space with the furthest limits of my body, my feet. The live performance drawing took five hours to create and it attraced a constant flow of onlookers, the crowd getting larger as the drawing neared completion. I also had requests by onlookers to be drawn into the composition so I obliged. They can be seen in the drawing around the periphery of teh page. So it became a drawing of me drawing as I looked down atmy feet on the paper and the crowd gathered around it.

This drawing was created live over four days through August 2012 and is part of an ongoing series titled 'Limits'. begun in 2011 at the Folkestone Triennial Fringe Festival. The process was to stand on the paper and draw using both feet, overall the drawing took around 12 hours. The fun part was meeting the locals in the hustle and bustle of the market nearby and in some cases creating portraits of them as they looked down at the work. The work was video documented.
