Douglas Atfield

Dimensions
1.5m x 14m x 80m - film 29 minutes

38 flags spelling SUBMISSION IS ADVANCING AT A FRIGHTFUL SPEED (text sourced by Simon Frazer) were placed on the fast eroding cliffs near Bawdsey, Suffolk, on 15 January 2005. Time-lapse images were made available on the web every 15 minutes throughout 2005, and the timelapse film Lines of Defence (Bettina Furnee & Tim Sidell, 29 minutes) documents the disappearance of the installation and 17 metres of land in one year (see: www.ifever.org.uk and go to 'Lines of Defence' and 'archive' to see 35,000 stills. You can also order the publication If Ever You're in the Area with DVD of the film).
