L'origine du Monde

Dimensions
11 cms x 37 cms

Assemblage made from found materials comprising: glass jar with plastic lidded top and wooden knob, metal tea strainer enclosing an egg, red rubber cone and white rope. The title alludes to the 1866 painting by Gustave Courbet in the Musee d' Orsay, Paris. This piece is influenced by early Surrealism and relies for its impact upon the juxtaposition of simple artefacts within a physically contained space that can only be accessed visually. If the lid is removed the tea strainer enclosing the egg is removed also and the work is fundamentally changed. Throughout my career, in tandem with my two dimensional work, I have made numerous constructions and assemblages, some wall hung and others free standing, as in this example.
