Material Evidence II

Material Evidence II brings together a series of synthetic fur pieces transformed through experiments with heat. Different colours, densities and lengths of fur respond in distinct ways: fibres shrink, curl, fuse and disappear, while surfaces become perforated, compressed or hardened. Installed together, the pieces reveal a vocabulary of marks and textures generated through the same process of material transformation.

The work emerged through sustained experimentation rather than from a predetermined visual outcome. Heat acts as both tool and collaborator, with variations in material and exposure producing forms that could not be entirely anticipated. Areas of recognisable fur remain alongside surfaces that have become difficult to identify.

Presented collectively, the pieces operate as a form of material evidence: an accumulation of tests, discoveries and transformations. Their elongated forms and irregular surfaces suggest fragments, specimens or material gathered for examination, while their ochre, grey, green and black surfaces evoke associations with bark, vegetation, scorched matter and eroded ground.

Material Evidence II considers making as a means of generating knowledge. Rather than documenting a single transformation, the work holds multiple material possibilities together, revealing how one family of synthetic textiles can move between states of familiarity and uncertainty through direct material enquiry.
