'Names Are Leaves' - public sculpture for Castle Vale, Birmingham

Stainless steel and paint sculpture 5m tall, commissioned by Active Arts Castle Vale and The Pioneer Group, Castle Vale Community Housing. The sculpture commemorates individuals who have made a difference to Castle Vale - with 'leaves' awarded to those who have made a contribution that went beyond role and expectation and whose names should be remembered for always inspiring others. The original brief was based on the 'Last Leaf' ancient wisdom. However, the community group preferred a positive take on the commemorative sculpture. The artist created a short poem emphasising celebration of life and named the sculpture 'Names Are Leaves' Names are Leaves Names are leaves, On family trees. When they fall, Others heed their call And the sap of knowledge Creates new foliage. Leave, like names, Through generations give. Names, like leaves, Through venerations live. Saranjit Birdi 2016
