Newcross and RJAH Orthopeidic Hospital proposals

Not applicable

This project 'Timeless-Eternal' was a proposal for the Newcross Hospital Heart and Lung centre atrium space. It proposed brightly coloured hanging screens, a large canvas (eternal flame image) and an abstract movement video work. It was shortlisted in the top two but was not ulimately realised. The proposal was inspired by Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhthyms movement meditation practice, Sikh philosophy and poems of Rabindranath Tagore. One of the project's stakeholder's was the local Sikh community. My lesson learnt from this experience was that although the artist might think in complex structures to create a contemporary work, the client and eventual consumer of the art work may want to engage in a much more direct and spontaneous manner and be discouraged by descriptions of complexity or underlying references. This was the feedback I received from the client after not winning the project and seeing its realisation. However, I went on to use the same inspirations studied for this project as reference for another work 'Drum Light', an interactive music and dance performance work for the BBC Big Screen in Birmingham City Centre. Gabrielle Roth's work now underpins some of the thinking within my arts in health and wellbeing practice.
